EASTHAMPTON - Donald H. Matthews, 81, of Easthampton, died Monday, July 22, 2013, in his home.
He was born March 9, 1932, in Northampton, the son of the late Lloyd and Elsie Smith Matthews.
He attended Smith Vocational School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army
during the Korean Conflict, receiving three Bronze Service Stars, United Nations and National Defense Service medals.
Donald retired in 1993 from Monson Auto Supply Company in Northampton. In his retirement he did part time work for Ralph's Black Smith Shop in Northampton.
Donald's wife Mary Ann (Prenis) died Sept. 30, 2012. He and his late wife enjoyed many days of camping with friends while raising their young family. He and Mary Ann also enjoyed target practice in their younger years. Donald was an antique gas and steam engine enthusiast attending community fairs to display and run these, attaining many ribbons for this.
Donald is survived by one daughter, Alison Matthews and companion Eric Althoff of Easthampton; two sons, Eric Matthews of Easthampton and Jason Matthews of Ashfield; two sisters, Barbara Hibbard and her husband John of Easthampton, and Dorothy Redington and her husband George of New Jersey; along with several nieces and nephews. He also has two grandchildren, Hannah Pease of Chicopee and Brian Pease of Easthampton.
Services and burial will be private at the Mitchell Funeral Home of Easthampton and there will be no calling hours.
