PITTSFIELD - Gerald J. "Jay" Baran, Jr., 49, of Pittsfield, formerly of Holyoke, the loving son of Gerald J. Sr., and Sandra (Moran) Baran of Easthampton, died Friday, May 3, 2013.
Jay was born Sept. 13, 1963, in Holyoke, and was educated in Holyoke public schools, graduating from Dean Technical High School in 1981. After completing his education, Jay enlisted in the United States Coast Guard
. During his tour of duty, Jay distinguished himself academically and also received several commendations from his superiors. He was honorably discharged in 1986 and began his civilian life in construction.
Among Jay's personal interests, were sports, particularly any team from Boston.
Jay will be missed by all, especially by his beloved daughter Savannah and her mother Valerie of Longmeadow, his brother Matthew and wife Stephanie of Enterprise, Ala. and his sisters Kathleen Welch of Easthampton and Cynthia Piubeni and husband Jeffrey of Westfield. He leaves his nieces and nephews Eric, Christopher, Marianne, Audrey, Jared, Aubrianna, Jacob and a grandniece Autumn. Jay also leaves many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, whom he loved dearly. "Jay had a heart of gold".
The funeral will be held Friday at 8:30 a.m. from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton St., Holyoke, followed by a Mass at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Cross Church. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.
Calling hours will be held Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.
