BELCHERTOWN - Katherine (Henderson) Avallone, 86, passed away on Friday at Cooley Dickinson Hospital, Northampton, with her family at her side.
She was born Oct. 3, 1926, in Norfolk. She was the daughter of the late Julia (Drown) Lasardo and Robert Henderson. She was one of seven children.
She was a business entrepreneur, having owned a restaurant, video store and a real estate business at various times in her life.
She went back to college at the age of 50 and earned a degree.
She was the wife of the late Frank Avallone Jr., who died in 1995. They had four children, Frank Avallone III of South Dakota, Ronald Avallone (deceased 2010), Linda Avallone-Arkle of Belchertown and Robert Avallone of Wilmington, Vt.
She leaves six grandchildren, Frank IV, Christopher and Amanda Avallone, January Arkle, Hunter and Desmond Avallone.
She loved being with her family. She took time from her busy life to care for her grandchildren when they were small. She enjoyed going to their sporting events as they grew older.
Katherine loved to play cards and bingo. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting. In the summer she looked forward to picking blueberries and in the fall she enjoyed picking apples and baking pies.
She retired in Florida. Several years ago she moved to South Dakota to live with her oldest son. In January of 2012 she returned to Massachusetts to live with her daughter and granddaughter.
She will join her husband at the Veteran's Cemetery in Randolph, Vt., in the spring with a celebration of her life at that time.
