FLORENCE - Lila M. (LaRose) Scagel departed peacefully from this life on Dec. 22, 2012.
She was born Jan. 9, 1928, in Fitchburg, the daughter of the late Joseph O. and Rose C.(Pratt) LaRose.
She grew up on Hawley Street in Northampton, attending local schools and graduating from Northampton High School in 1946.
She married her late husband, Roy L. Scagel, on April 23, 1949. They raised three children while owning and operating an apartment block in Easthampton and the Log Cabin Motel on Route 9 in Goshen. After selling their businesses, they built their dream home in Florence, where they lived for the rest of their lives together.
One of Lila's greatest accomplishments was graduating from Smith Vocational School of Nursing when she was 40 and working as an LPN at local area hospitals. She also graduated from Holyoke Community College.
She enjoyed reading, old movies, music and traveling. She was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Northampton. She enjoyed and loved her family very much.
She leaves behind her beloved family to cherish her memory. Her children, Leonard R. Scagel of Florence, Cynthia R. (Peter) Stone of Port St. Lucie, Fla. and Lisa J. Simoneaux of Martinsville, Ind.; her grandchildren, Matthew J. (Barbara) Martineau of West Warren, Shaun M. Martineau of Easthampton and Olivia N. Simoneaux of South Deerfield; her great-grandchildren, Michael S. Henry, Zackary M. Martineau and Ellazondra I. Martineau all of Turners Falls. She is also survived by her sister Jean (Alvin) Rejniak of Northampton and her brother John (Sumiko) LaRose of Moreno Valley, Calif.
Besides her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her sister Harriet Purvis and her brothers, Joseph, Robert and Albert.
Lila's family would like to thank Dr. Henry Simkin, her longtime physician and all of the staff at the Lathrop Home, Overlook of Northampton, Calvin Coolidge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and the Hospice Team for their tender care of our Mom through the end of her journey.
There will be a memorial service on June 22, 2013.
