Lillian Silver Obituary

AMHERST - Lillian Brenig Silver, 86, former college professor and administrator, loving mother, grandmother and loyal friend, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Arden Courts Assisted Living in West Orange, N.J., where she had recently settled after leaving her longtime home in Amherst, last November, to be closer to her family.

Born in France in 1927, she was a Holocaust survivor. Lillian was raised in Vienna, Austria, before coming to New York in 1940 with her parents, Isak and Sylvia, and her sister Rita.

She attended Hunter College on scholarship, and went on to get a master's degree in history at Ohio State University.

She moved to Amherst in 1960, living 52 years in North
Amherst. There she raised her son Dan, was married to Arnold Silver until 1978, and had two loving dogs, Nippity and Pokey.

A true woman of the 5 colleges, Lillian held jobs at three of them. She worked at Smith College as an adjunct professor in the history department, at the University of Massachusetts in the labor relations department, and finally at Amherst College as an administrator in the fine arts department.

Lillian enjoyed a wide array of friends and was involved in the Amherst community in many ways, including a period on the Town Council. She was an avid swimmer, an ardent classical music lover, and enjoyed the many cultural events in the 5 college area. She also treasured her neighbors on Harris Street.

She is survived by her son Dan Silver and his wife Leslie of West Caldwell, N.J., and her two beloved grandchildren, Dylan and Collin Silver, as well as her dear cousin Theo Brenig and his wife Ruth of Lynchburg, Va.

She will be remembered by cherished family, friends and neighbors from Amherst, as well as those in New Jersey, Virginia, New Mexico and California.
