Mary A. (Pankievich) Golonka(1918-2013)

Whately - Mary A. Golonka, 94, of 6 State Road, Whately, died April 4, 2013, in Cooley Dickinson Hospital, Northampton, as a result of a house fire. She was born in Greenfield Sept. 3, 1918, the daughter of Michael and Mary (Solak) Pankievich.
Mary was educated in Greenfield schools and graduated from Greenfield High School in the class of 1936. In her early years, she worked at Lunt Silversmith in Greenfield. She married Bernard J. Golonka on April 12, 1942, making their home in Shelburne Falls. They moved to Whately in 1956. Together, they operated a farm where they cultivated tobacco and produce. Bernard predeceased her on May 25, 2003.
Mary was a member of Holy Family Church in South Deerfield. She enjoyed Sudoku, word search puzzles and chicken noodle soup. She also loved her pets and flowers. In her younger years, Mary sewed most of her children's clothes. She knitted and crocheted until arthritis made it too difficult. Mary loved spending time with her large and extended family.
Survivors include her sons Lawrence Golonka and his wife Peggy of Sunderland and James Golonka and his wife Janice of North Hatfield; her daughters, Susan Francis and her husband Jon of Warner Robbins, Ga., Marilyn Streciwilk and her husband Stanley of Montague, Barbara St. Germain and her husband Phillip of Turners Falls, and Elizabeth Fletcher of South Lake, Texas. She also leaves eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Bernard J. Golonka Sr. and her son Bernard J. Golonka Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 10, at 9 a.m. from the Wrisley Funeral Home, Sugarloaf Street, South Deerfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church with Fr. Philippe Roux, pastor, officiating. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.
Burial will be in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery in Greenfield. Donations in her memory may be made to the Whately Fire Department, c/o John Hannum, or any surrounding town fire department.
