FLORENCE - Raymond A. Lequin, 85, of Burts Pit Road, passed away Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at the Soldiers' Home in Holyoke.
Ray was born May 31, 1928, in Holyoke, the son of the late Raymond H. and Beatrice (Croteau) Lequin. Ray was raised in Holyoke, attending local schools and graduated from Holyoke High School in 1946.
He joined the U.S. Army
and served from 1946 to 1948 as part of the occupation of Japan. He married his beloved Helen Chliszczyk Sept. 6, 1948, at St. Anthony's Church in Chicopee.
He worked for many years as a mason and retired from Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, as a medical records clerk.
Raymond loved to sing and sang with a barber shop quartet, "the Blue Notes", and with friends and fellow church members. He was an avid runner and also hiked many of the mountains and trails in the northeast with his sons and grandsons.
He leaves his wife Helen Lequin of Florence. He also leaves his six children, his daughter Nancy and her husband Michael Sheldon of Sandy, Utah, his daughter Judy and her husband Jeff Holman of Florence, his son Dan and his wife Joan of Savoy, his son Gerry of Altmar, N.Y., his son Raymond and his wife Krislyn of Chesterfield, and his daughter Joann and her husband Bruce Toomey of Anchorage, Alaska. He also leaves his 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sister Joan Lequin.
A funeral service for Ray will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton. A calling hour will precede the service from 2 to 3 p.m. Burial in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam will be private.
