NORTHAMPTON - Real Kirouac, 92, of 206 North St., passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at the Hospice of the Fisher Home in Amherst.
Born Oct. 2, 1920, in Northampton, Real was the son of the late Arthur and Leonora (Ancell) Kirouac.
His family moved to France shortly after he was born, returning to Northampton in 1948. Real was a World War II Army
veteran and a prisoner of war.
He worked as a nursing assistant at the VA Medical Center in Leeds for over 30 years, retiring in 1981. He also worked at the Big Y in Northampton for over 25 years.
He was a longtime communicant of the former Sacred Heart Church, now St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, polka dancing, vacationing at Cape Cod and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a longtime fan of the Eddie Forman Orchestra, following his band for over 40 years.
Real is survived by his wife, Barbara (Sanders) Kirouac; his son, Alan Kirouac and his wife Patricia of Goshen; his daughter Janine Sage and her husband David of South Grafton; his three brothers, Rene Kirouac of Williamsburg, Va.; Michel Kirouac of Northampton and Guy Kirouac of Leeds; his six grandchildren, Eric, Mathew, Leanora, Katie, Lindsay and Sean; two former daughters-in-law, Cathleen Grady and Holly Wilson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his two sons, Jean-Lionel Kirouac and Kevin Kirouac.
Real's funeral will be Monday at 9 a.m. from the Ahearn Funeral Home, 783 Bridge Road, Northampton, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 354 Elm St., Northampton. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Calling Hours are Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
