Robert F. "Bob" Kumor Jr.(1946 - 2013)

CHICOPEE - The Honorable Robert F. Kumor, Jr., passed away Sunday, July 21, 2013, from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Born Feb. 6, 1946, son of the late Robert F. Sr., and Rita (Courtney) Kumor, he attended Chicopee public schools and graduated from Chicopee High School class of 1963. He graduated in 1967 from the College of the Holy Cross and received his Juris Doctorate from Boston College Law School in 1970. He was awarded a master's of public administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Bob enrolled at Officers Candidate School for the U.S. Marine Corps and went on active duty Jan. 1, 1971. He graduated from the Naval Justice School in Newport, R.I., in October of 1971. He was assigned to the Third Marine Division on Okinawa in November 1971 and served off the coast of Vietnam. Returning to the United States, he was stationed with the 2nd Marine Air Wing. He became a Judge Advocate in the Special Court Martial Military at Cherry Point, N.C.

Bob was in private practice for nine years. He served as mayor of Chicopee from 1980 to 1984. Former Governor Michael S. Dukakis appointed him deputy commissioner in the Department of Environmental Management. He also served as the assistant secretary in the Executive Office for Administration and Finance. Bob was appointed to the District Court bench in 1990 by former Governor Dukakis. For nine years he was the first justice in Springfield District Court and had worked in district courts throughout Western Massachusetts since 2005. He received the Judicial Excellence Award at the Massachusetts Judges' Conference in 2009.

Bob served as the Chicopee St. Patrick's Parade Marshall in 1992. He was inducted into Chicopee High School's Hall of Fame in 2002, and held membership in the Colony Club, the Others Club, Konkapot Anglers Club and Paralyzed Veterans of America.

Bobby is survived by his devoted sisters Maryellen Kumor Channing of Chicopee and Susan Kumor Frisbie and her husband Robert of Virginia. He also leaves his five nephews and their spouses, Christopher Channing and his wife Katie DeGrio Channing, Esq., and their daughter Grace, James R. Channing, Esq., and his wife Shelly-Anne Sankar, Esq., and their sons Robert and Joseph, Peter Frisbie and his wife Nicole Noland Frisbie and their son Brendan, Daniel Frisbie and his wife Johanna Gnall, Esq., and Joseph Frisbie and his wife Michelle Dye Frisbie. He leaves his aunt Nora C. Lynch and his uncle Stanley Kumor, both of Chicopee, along with many cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister Marian in 1953.

His sisters would like to thank Judge Kumor's Supper Club and Bobby K's Friends for all the support shown toward their brother. His caregivers Branden Learned, Brygida Tilman, Daniel McNamee and Robert Burnett went above and beyond to make his life more comfortable.

Funeral services for Bob will be held Friday at 8:30 a.m. from the Kozikowski Funeral Home, 565 Front St., Chicopee, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, 357 Broadway, Chicopee. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery.

Calling hours are Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.
