SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Scott Craig McNiven, 36, of San Francisco, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, from cancer.
He was born April 22, 1977, on Earth Day.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Libby) McNiven and his son Clark; his parents Roy (Sandy) and Becky McNiven of 23 Greenleaves Drive, Amherst; his sister Julie and her husband Michael Beck of Los Angeles; his grandmother June McNiven of Ogunquit, Maine; his in-laws David and Brenda Sproat of Duluth, Minn.; and many cousins, aunts and uncles.
Scott graduated from Amherst High School in 1995. He received a bachelor's degree in anthropology from Grinnell College in 1998, an master's degree in agricultural and applied economics from the University of Wisconsin
Madison in 2004, and was a doctoral student in agricultural and resource economics at the University of California Davis.
Besides spending time with his wife and son, Scott loved playing Ultimate, hiking, backpacking and rock climbing. His family and many friends will remember him as a kind, fun-loving, selfless person with a big smile, contagious optimism, and a zest for life.
There will be a memorial service in January, in California, and a service on the east coast in the summer. Plans have not been finalized.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to his department at U.C. Davis in Scott's honor. Checks should be made payable to U.C.
