Florence - Thomas A. Stokowski, 60, of 97 Lake St., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at Mass General Hospital after a long illness.
Born in Chicopee, July 6, 1952, he was the son of Benedict and Gladys (Kowal) Stokowski. He was educated in Chicopee schools and was a 1970 graduate of Chicopee Comprehensive High School. He later earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He had resided in Northampton since 1979.
Thomas was a salesman for over 20 years for the NWS Corp. He worked for R&R Corrugated Box Co., and most recently at the Daily Hampshire Gazette.
Growing up, Thomas was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Church in Chicopee and most recently a member of the Unitarian Society of Northampton and Florence.
He was a musician and songwriter and loved playing the guitar. He was a yearly volunteer at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. He enjoyed all things of the natural world - fishing, bird-watching, hiking, the woods and the beach. Bike riding was his favorite form of excerise.
Besides his parents, Benedict and Gladys of Chicopee, Thomas is survived by his wife, Patricia McGuinness; his son, Alexander Stokowski of Florence; his daughter, Kara Stokowski of Jamaica Plain; his sisters, Mary Jane Tobin and her husband, James, of Florence, and Teresa Picard and her husband, David, of Chicopee; and his nieces and nephews, Nathan, Emily, Colleen, Rebecca, Melissa, Max, Sarah, Michael and Meghan.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at the Annunciation Chapel of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 85 Beacon St., Florence. Following the Mass, burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Chicopee. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the Ahearn Funeral Home, 783 Bridge Road, Northampton.
