Roger Miller Obituary

Roger R. Miller, 92, of Easthampton, died on December 14, 2018, after a brief illness. He was born in Wamego, Kansas on December 21, 1925, the son of Frederick and Florence (Rowles) Miller. Roger graduated from Yale University in 1946 with a bachelor's degree in history. He later obtained both a masters and a doctorate degree in social work from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. A captain in the Army and a veteran of the Korean War, Roger moved to Northampton in 1960 to become a faculty member of the Smith College School for Social Work. Roger taught at the social work school for several decades, eventually becoming the Director of the Doctoral Research Program there as well as the editor of the Smith College Studies in Social Work.

Roger's many passions included tennis, gardening, and painting. But, his biggest passion was playing duplicate bridge, which he did several times a week. He loved to tell jokes, and particularly enjoyed puns. Above all, he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend.

His family includes his wife of nearly 40 years, Barbara Strauss Miller; his children, Kate Miller of Portland, Oregon, Susan Miller of Shutesbury, Douglas Miller of Thailand, Dorothy Miller of Greenfield, and Anne Zinkin of Concord, New Hampshire; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Frederick Miller of Florence.

A memorial service will be held at the Ahearn Funeral Home, 783 Bridge Road, Northampton on February 9, 2019. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Roger's memory to ServiceNet, 21 Olander Drive, Northampton, MA 01060.

Psalm 90:10 says that the days of our years are 70 years, And if because of special mightiness they are 80 years.
May the memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile and joy in your heart.
