NORTHAMPTON – Antonia S. (Dec) Jakobek, 95, of Northampton, formerly of Hadley, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.

She was born June 15, 1918, in Hadley, to the late Alec and Nellie (Drozdal) Dec. She married John C. Jakobek at Holy Rosary Church in Hadley in 1942.
She graduated from Hopkins Academy and the University of Massachusetts and was said to have been the first graduate of a non-Catholic undergraduate program to have been admitted to the University of Detroit's graduate dietitian program. She also studied at the University of New Hampshire.
She served in the women's Army Air Corp during World War II, rising to the level of captain. After the war, she worked as a dietitian at the Veteran's Administration in Leeds and at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
Anne and John moved to Merrimac, where John was superintendent of schools for the Pentucket Regional School District for 30 years. After the family moved to Merrimac, Anne changed careers and became an elementary school teacher for many years in the Haverhill schools. After she and John retired, they returned to live in Hadley for many years. Prior to moving to Merrimac, John had been principal of Smith Academy and superintendent of schools in Hatfield.
She is survived by her son John, Jr., of Hadley; her son James and his wife Sara of Needham; her daughter Kathy Ramsey of Lynchburg, Va., and her daughter Susan Jakobek of Peabody; her grandchildren Andrew, Lisa and James; her great-grandson Karl Abay; and several nieces and nephews.
Antonia was predeceased by her loving husband John, Sr., and her siblings Mary, Stan, Wallace and Stanley.
There will be no calling hours. There will be a Liturgy of Christian Burial Friday at 10 a.m. at Most Holy Redeemer Parish, Hadley. Burial with military honors will follow at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Hadley. Drozdal Funeral Home of Northampton is in charge of the arrangements.
