EASTHAMPTON - Arnold "Doc" Vincent Cleary Jr., 86, a loving and devoted husband of 61 years to the late Lou Ann (Hall) Cleary, and dedicated father and grandfather, died at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013.

He was born April 16, 1926 in Northampton, the son of the late Arnold V. Cleary Sr. and Leah (Sutcliff) Cleary. He was raised in Easthampton, educated in public schools, and graduated from Easthampton High School, class of 1943. "Doc" as he was known to many, continued his education at American International College, completing just one year before being drafted into the United States Navy to serve our country during World War II.
He served in the South Pacific with the amphibious unit aboard the U.S.S. Hinsdale APA 120 and drove the LCVP landing crafts that landed on Iwo Jima and Okinawa before being struck by Japanese Kamikaze. After returning from war, he went to Massachusetts School of Optometry in Boston, before entering the work force. He worked for the Kaman Aerospace in Bloomfield, Conn., for 35 years as a shop supply supervisor before retiring in 1986.
He was very active and supportive in his children's youth activities, and he and his late wife, Lou Ann, would be seen at many local sporting events at Daley Field in Easthampton. He loved playing sports, gardening and traveling the country and Cape Cod with his family, and was also an avid Red Sox fan. "Doc" was most proud of his Irish heritage and was a life long parishioner of the former Immaculate Conception Parish, now Our Lady of the Valley.
Arnold is survived by his loving family; four daughters, Ann Voorhees of Corning, N.Y., Paula J. Drabek of Leeds, Linda Fraboni and her husband David of Atlanta, Ga., and Susan Connery and her husband Michael of Florence; one son, Thomas Cleary and his wife Mary of Hebron, Ky.; one sister, Mary Jones of Northampton; nine grandchildren, Christine Grover and her husband Eric, Michael Voorhees, David Fraboni, Nicholas Fraboni, Drew Drabek, Leah Drabek, Ashleigh Cleary, T.J. Cleary and Emily Cleary; and one great-granddaughter Ava Grover.
Besides his wife, Lou Ann, in 2012, he was predeceased by his son, James V. Cleary, in 2011, a son-in-law, Donald Voorhees, in 1998 and a sister, Jean Bennette.
Services for "Doc" will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at 10 a.m. with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Valley Parish, 33 Adams St., Easthampton. Burial with military honors will follow at the family grave site at Saint Brigid's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Monday, Jan. 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Graham Funeral Home, 18 Adams St., Easthampton, which has been entrusted with providing for his care and services.
