Donald Rhoades Affhauser, 92, of Barefoot Bay, Fl., died Aug. 24, 2013.
Born Dec. 21, 1920 in Greenfield, he was the son of the late Anthony and Myrtle Rhoades Affhauser. He was educated in the Florence school system and was a graduate of Smith Vocational High School in Northampton.
Donald was a WWII Army veteran, serving in the Signal Corps, when he was discharged in 1945 as a Tech 5. He served in the New Guinea, Southern Philippines and Luzon campaigns, receiving a Bronze Star, Victory Medal, American Theatre Ribbon and Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon, during his three years of wartime service.
After his return, Donald moved his family to Florence, where the family resided for many years.
Donald was a prominent businessman in the community in which he lived. He was the founder, owner and president of Hampshire Engineering Service, Inc., a heating and cooling business, which engineered, installed and serviced heating equipment. The business was later expanded to include Lennox Fuel, Inc., an authorized Shell heat-inspecting oil dealer.
Many people fondly remember his business as the "Home of the Tin Man" on Route 9 in Northampton. Donald retired in 1978, allowing him time to winter in Barefoot Bay, Fl.
The Affhauser family enjoyed spending time at their cottage on Highland Lake in Goshen and more recently on Pine Island Lake in Westhampton.
He was a member of the former Ionic Lodge of Masons in Easthampton, now, the Jerusalem Lodge in Hatfield, Northampton Lions Club and The National Rifle Association. He was a long-standing and active member of the Florence Congregational Church. He was a member of the Northampton Country Club, but made a hole-in-one, in his 89th year, at Barefoot Bay Country Club in Florida. He was an avid hunter and part of The Gun and Bow Sport Club, which were well known for their game dinners.
Donald was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Helen Iler Affhauser, having passed in 1995; his parents; three sisters; and one great-grandson, Jamie. Donald is survived by his wife, Hetty Erb Affhauser of Florida; seven children: Karen Marney and Charles of Leeds, Kris Celatka and William of Goshen, Karyl Stachowicz and Michael of Huntington, Kurt Affhauser and Jeanne of Easthampton, Kim Larkin and Kevin of Southampton, Keith Affhauser and Anna of New York, Karl Affhauser of Haydenville; 14 grandchildren: Korrie Wilson, Craig Marney, Chad Marney, Todd Celatka, Cassandra Celatka, Michael Stachowicz, Jeremy Stachowicz, John Smart, Jess Affhauser, Nicholas Divenere, Kaytlyn Tetreault, Marlea Larkin, Sam Affhauser, and Parker Affhauser; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Sept. 9, at 11 a.m., at Mitchell Funeral Home, 15 Park St., Easthampton, preceded by a Masonic Evergreen Service.
Donations in Donald's memory may be made to the Florence Congregational Church, 130 Pine St., Florence, 01062.
