NORTHAMPTON - George D'Astous, Sr., 90, of Florence, passed away Friday, Aug. 1, 2014 at Linda Manor Nursing Home. He was born Sept. 17, 1923 in St. Damase, Quebec, Canada, the son of the late Joseph and Rose Helen (St. Pierre) D'Astous.
George loved God, family and country and served in the U.S. Army in Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe during WWII. He was awarded three Bronze Service Stars and the Good Conduct Medal.
George was self-employed as a finished carpenter, specializing as a floor and wall covering contractor. He enjoyed gardening and working with stained glass.
George is survived by his wife of 61 years, Germaine (Archambault) D'Astous, his son George D'Astous Jr. and his wife Brenda and their sons, Christopher, Gregory and Joseph of Chesterfield; George's daughters Jeanne Mazuch and her husband William and their daughters Christina and Rebecca of West Hatfield; daughter Suzanne Vargas and her husband Elbin and their daughter Elizabeth of Florence, daughter Nina Boucher and her sons Corey, Joshua and David of Easthampton, daughter Linda Benoit and her husband Raymond and their children Connor, Alexandra and Samantha of Westfield, his son Donald D'Astous of North Adams and his children William, Julia and Lauren. George is also survived by his brother Zenon D'Astous and his wife Barbara of Northampton and a sister Sr. Violette D'Astous of Albany, New York. His daughter Pauline D'Astous died in 1979. George was also predeceased by four of his sisters. He leaves 47 nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Czelusniak funeral Home of Northampton followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. at St Elizabeth Ann Seton Church on King Street in Northampton. Calling Hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial at the Massachusetts Veterans Cemetery in Agawam will be private. Memorials can be made to Wounded Warrior Project P.O.
