Hatfield - James L. Hogan, 82, of 22 School St., passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving night, Nov. 28, 2013, surrounded by his family.
Jim was born May 9, 1931, in Northampton, the only child of the late Timothy Joseph and Eva O. (Moreau) Hogan. He was raised and educated in Northampton and graduated from the former St. Michael's High School in 1950 where he was an avid basketball player. He began his work life at the age of 16 at former Dinsmore & Jaeger, a violinmaker in Northampton.
Upon graduation, Jim began his career at the Daily Hampshire Gazette, where he stayed 52 years. He was proud of his work in various machinist positions as the technology evolved over the years.
Jim oversaw the newspaper's transition from the use of linotype typesetting to the computer age. He learned to operate and repair the various computer systems at the Gazette. He was a valuable member of the Gazette family and will be sorely missed. His pleasant attitude and cheerful disposition will always be remembered at the Gazette.
Upon his retirement in 1993, Jim and his son Michael formed a new business. As the president of Precision Metal Goods, Jim enjoyed working with his family on this endeavor until most recently.
Jim enjoyed anything mechanical. He used these self-taught skills to work on vintage cars and trucks as well as tractors and bicycles. He was a member of the Model T Club and the Northampton Elks Lodge. Jim was also a communicant of Our Lady of Grace Parish in Hatfield.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Patricia Ann (O'Brien). He will also be dearly missed by his sons Timothy and his wife, Debra, and Michael and his wife, Joanne, and their two daughters, Katherine and Shannen.
His funeral will be Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013 at 8:45 a.m. from The Ahearn Funeral Home followed by a liturgy of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Grace Church in Hatfield at 10 a.m.
Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Northampton. Calling hours are Tuesday, December 3, 2013 from 4 to 7 p.m.
