SOUTHAMPTON - Joseph S. Keller, 90, was born Aug. 1, 1923, to Stanislaw and Ludwika (Sczesna) Keller in his home on the Manhan River, as the youngest of seven siblings, Frank, Walter, Helena, Josephine, Bertha, Marian and Louis, and died Thursday, June 5, 2014, in the same home.

Joe passed away on the anniversary of his military unit's march to liberate Rome in World War II. Joe was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart before being honorably discharged in 1945.

Joe then worked for the railroad, the United States Post Office, and as a police officer in Southampton. He later worked for the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles for many years at the Westfield office.

He was a collector of automobile license plates. He was never happier than when hunting and fishing, or sitting in his garage with friends and family, overlooking his swans, ducks, and geese on the river.

Joe is survived by his wife of 66 years, Rosemarie (Smith) Keller; two sons James of Hudson, Florida, and daughter-in-law Diane, and Louis of Southampton; two grandchildren, Kimberly Putnam and husband Lowell of Longmeadow, and Jon Keller and fiancée Sharon Collier of Indian Orchard; two great-grandchildren, Sara and Jen Putnam; nephew Robert Niedzwiecki and wife Fern of Southampton; in addition to many close friends and family members.

Special thanks to Anne Fox, LPN, Eileen Hoarle of Hampshire County Hospice, and O'Connell Home Health Care professionals.

The funeral will be held Monday, June 9, at 1 p.m. from the Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad St., Westfield. Calling hours will precede the service Monday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
