SOUTHAMPTON - Peter H. DeBruyn, 78, of Southampton, and North Fort Myers, Fla., died Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Baystate Medical Center, after a long illness.

Born and raised in Quincy, he was a Navy veteran, serving on the U.S.S. Antietem in 1955, then worked at the Naval Shipyard at Quincy. After earning his master plumber's license, Peter worked as a plumber until his retirement from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2000. He also served as water commissioner for the town of Southampton.
He was a member of the Southampton Lion's Club, where he enjoyed many good friends and memorable outings. After moving to North Fort Myers, Fla., in 2005, he joined the Elks Lodge #2742, where he enjoyed cooking for members and guests and was proud to serve as Exalted Ruler of the Lodge from 2012 to 2013.
Throughout his life he loved dairy farming, fishing, camping, cooking, laughter and an occasional beer, or two, with friends.
Peter leaves behind Sandra Lang DeBruyn, his beloved wife of 55 years; his two daughters, Ellen DeBruyn of Southampton, and Linda DeBruyn of Maynard; one son, Stephen of Vernon, Conn.; and five grandchildren, Miranda, Jackson, Lily, Mason and Tucker. He is also survived by two brothers, Harold F. of Montara, Calif., and Edward J. of Sarasota, Fla., as well as several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Friday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with a Service at 12 p.m. in the Mitchell Funeral Home, Easthampton, with a graveside service following at the Southampton Town Cemetery.
