SOUTHAMPTON - Phillip H. Matthews, 87, of Pomeroy Meadow Road, passed away Monday, Sept. 1, 2014, at the Holyoke Soldiers Home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Rutland, Vermont, he was the son of the late Howard and Jane (Fish) Matthews.

Phillip retired in 1987 as an insurance agent with John Hancock Life Insurance Company and was a World War II Veteran serving with the United States Army.

He was a member of the Easthampton Congregational Church, Deacon Emeritus and had served on many boards. A member of the Pascommuck Club, Northampton Elks Lodge, Northampton Masonic Lodge, a former commissioner of the Samuel Williston Main Street Cemetery and a former president of the Wright Homestead retirement home.

Phillip leaves his wife of 64 years, Ruth (Pepin) Matthews; his two sons, P. Scott Matthews of Boonville, New York, and Alan C. Matthews and his wife Patty of Westfield; his daughter Cindy Talor and her husband George of Mission Viejo, California; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Matthews and Patricia Kennedy; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his brother Robert Matthews.

A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Easthampton Congregational Church, 112 Main St., Easthampton, followed with a burial with military honors at the Samuel Williston Main Street Cemetery. The family will receive guest at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holyoke Soldiers Home, Easthampton Congregational Church, or the VNA Hospice of Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
