EASTHAMPTON - Ronald Schaffer, 77, of Easthampton, passed away Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, in the Calvin Coolidge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Northampton.

He was born Sept. 6, 1936, in South Bend, Ind., the son of the late Robert and Helen Warner Schaffer. He attended schools in South Bend, before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Vietnam Conflict. He was stationed at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, where he met his wife the former Joyce McNamara Schaffer. Joyce died Jan. 13, 1971.

Ronald became a police officer serving with the Easthampton Police Department for 23 years, retiring in 1997. Ronald was proud to be a man in blue serving his community.

He was a member of the Massachusetts Police Association and the Moose Club of Chicopee.

Ronald is survived by his longtime companion friend and caregiver Pam Southwick and her daughter Alexis Benoit of Florence; one son, Kenneth Schaffer of Florida; one daughter, Louri Sanderson of Rhode Island; two sisters, Joyce Weber and Audrey Vaughn, both of Indiana; five grandchildren; and a sister-in-law Sheila Coutch of Easthampton.

He was predeceased by one son, Ronald K. Schaffer.

Ronald's funeral will be held Thursday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m. in Mitchell Funeral Home, 15 Park St., Easthampton, with police honors. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be Wednesday, Dec. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Make a Wish Foundation, 181 Park Ave., Suite 12, West Springfield, MA.
