NORTHAMPTON - W. Kirk Ruhl Sr., 88, of 50 Firethorn Lane, Northampton, passed away Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013.
Born in Quincy, Ill. on Feb. 8, 1925, he was the son of the late Myron and Edna (Sumpter) Ruhl.
Kirk served his country in World War II in the U.S. Navy. Kirk spent the bulk of his professional career as a plant layout engineer at Cessna Aircraft. He worked part time in his retirement at A2Z Science and Learning Store where everyone referred to him as "Grandpa."
He loved to hunt and fish and was passionate about his bird dogs. Kirk was also a skilled gardener.
He often presented a stern demeanor, but was known to fall victim to uncontrolled laughter when humor triumphed. He had a joyful side that men of his era seldom reveal.
Kirk is survived by his children; Priscilla and her spouse Jack Finn of Northampton, Zach Ruhl and his partner Don Landstrom of Mapleton, Ore., Kim and his spouse Faith Ruhl of Ada, Okla., and W. Kirk Jr. and his spouse Becky Ruhl of Lawrence, Kan.; four grandchildren, Daniel Finn of Sunderland, Patrick Finn of Northampton, Bethany Ruhl and Nathan Ruhl of Lawrence, Kan.; a brother, Sherrell Ruhl of St. Cloud, Minn.; and a sister, Marilyn Jordan of Raleigh, N.C.
He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Prudence, and his wife, Kathleen (Nelson) Ruhl, his wife of 66 years.
