SHUTESBURY- Alphonse Albert Plaza, 78, passed away on Oct. 2, 2012. His kind and gentle soul and penchant for humor resonated with all. Alphonse was the epitome of family-- he will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts and minds.

Born in Turners Falls, he graduated with bachelors and masters of science degrees from the University of Massachusetts. A lifelong learner and supporter of education, he taught at Holyoke Community College and retired from Holyoke High School after heading up the science department and teaching both science and physics for over four decades. A former president and active member of the Lion's Club, and former assessor of the town of Shutesbury, he enjoyed roles contributing to the community.

He was an absolutely wonderful husband of 50 years to Rita Plaza of Shutesbury. They were introduced by Al's brother Nate at a polka dance many years ago-- a life defining moment that brought him great joy in his marriage and family life. He was a proud and loving father of Regina Plaza of Petaluma, Calif., Linda Ehlers of Superior, Colo., Lisa Plaza of Easthampton and

Christa Plaza of Lafayette, Colo., and great supporter of all their pursuits in life. He was the sweetest Dziapa to Seyla and Eliza Muise of Petaluma, Calif. and Vincent Maupin of Easthampton who giggled at his silly jokes and his never-ending pursuit of the answer to his question about the square root of seven.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Plaza and his brother, Bernard Plaza.

He is survived by his mother, Stacia Plaza of Turners Falls, as well as his brothers, Nathanial Plaza and John Plaza and his sister, Maria Bonsavage.

He was kind and thoughtful to everyone. He is survived by numerous extended family members and friends whom he loved dearly.
