NORTHAMPTON – McDermott, Barbara Dougherty formerly of Belmont and then Arlington,  died peacefully Monday afternoon, August 6, 2018 in Northampton, with her daughter, Mary, by her side.

She was predeceased by her parents Dr. H. L. Dougherty and Katharine Welsh Dougherty as well as her siblings, Kay Dougherty, Lawton Dougherty (Mutsuko) and Paul Dougherty.

Barbara was raised in Jamaica Plain and cherished the lifelong friends she had growing up. She had fond memories of her youth and especially time spent in Virginia with her family there.

She attended Regis College and married a Holy Cross man, Charles E. McDermott, with whom she had five children.  After raising her family, she rejoined the work force as an Executive Assistant, working with Education for Management in Watertown. She particularly enjoyed the work she did for the company's owner, Robert A. Farmer, who was at the time a top Democratic Fundraiser as she was involved in organizing various fund raising events providing an opportunity to meet many interesting people.

Barbara had many interests over the years-antiquing on Cape Cod, doing family genealogy, and following her retirement she became an avid and quite skilled bridge player. This game afforded her not just a keen mind but a circle of new and dear friends.

Barbara had a wonderful sense of humor which she maintained until the end along with her stylish appearance.

She had a genuine love of dogs and always had a faithful companion by her side- Sam, Nell, Toby and Jack were all very special to her.

Barbara is survived by her five children- Ann Miller (Alan) of Walpole, Paul McDermott of Nashua New Hampshire, Mary McDermott (Amelia Stevens) of Easthampton, Jane Kelly of St. Margaret's Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, Michael McDermott (Sue McCarthy) of Waltham.

She is lovingly remembered by her eight grandchildren: Kate Winters (Evan), Meghan Baldwin (Mike), Michael Miller, Sara Kelly, Jimmy McDermott, Maura Kelly, Liz McDermott and Bryan McDermott.

Barbara experienced great joy in being the great-grandmother to Declan, Maeve, Grace, Bridget and Rory.

Cremation is to take place and is being arranged by the Ahearn Funeral Home, Northampton.  Funeral arrangements will be private.

Remembrances may be made in Barbara's name to the Joslin Diabetes Center, One Joslin Place, Suite 745, Boston, MA 02215 or
