FLORENCE- Carl Russo, 63, of Florence, passed away on Oct. 7, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield.

Carl was born in Watervliet, N.Y., the son of the late John and Marjorie (Christie) Russo.

Carl graduated from The University of Buffalo in 1967. At first he couldn't decide if he wanted to study law or social work, but ended up choosing social work and received a masters degree from Buffalo. In his first job he worked with young teens at the local YMCA. Later he came to Northampton to work at the Veterans Administration in Leeds. While working there he decided to go to law school at night and eventually graduated from Western New England School of Law. After 10 years of social work, he established his own law office.

Carl enjoyed the company of his friends and loved ones by hosting an annual party. The holidays in particular held a special joy for him in the way he decorated and opened his home to others. In the midst of his middle age, Carl found new ways to be involved and support his community. Whether it was producing at Northampton Community Television, co-hosting a radio show on Valley Free Radio, being a member of the Arts Council, or co-directing The Florence Poets Society, he brought passion to all these things. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He leaves his wife Bonnie Burnham; their children, Blythe Russo and her partner Craig MacNeill of Boston, Alexander Russo and Maggie Russo, both of Florence; his brothers, Michael Russo of Watervliet, N.Y. and John Russo of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Boucher-O'Brien Funeral Home, 7 Pleasant Street, Easthampton.

Donations can be made to the Education Fund Of Maggie Russo, attention: Judith Cernak or Dawn Hibbert, Florence Branch, Northampton Cooperative Bank, 6 Main St., Florence, MA 01052, 413-584-5266.
