Carlton Koehler Obituary

WEST LEBANON, N.H. - Carlton S. Koehler, 81, died Tuesday, April 29, 2014, in West Lebanon.

He was born July 20, 1932, in Holyoke, Mass., son of Frank and Katherine (Smith) Koehler of Fairview, Mass. He grew up and attended school in South Hadley, Mass., and later graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. In 1954 he married Maybelle Chandler of Lenox, Mass., in Pittsfield, Mass.

Much of Carl's adult life was spent as a faculty member at the University of California Berkeley where he was an entomologist specializing in the study of insects destructive to ornamental and agricultural crops.

Apart from resident teaching, research and extension, he became interested in international entomology, and was involved with activities of the Rockefeller Foundation, the International Rice Research Institute, and the U.S. Agency for International Development. He spent consultancies in East Africa and South Asia.

In 1991, he and Maybelle retired to the upper Connecticut valley, first living in Lyme, then in Thetford Center, Vt., for 20 years. When May's health started declining in 2007, he was a dedicated caregiver, first at home in Thetford, and also after May entered Valley Terrace Assisted Living in 2011. At that time, Carl relocated to West Lebanon.

Survivors include his daughter Leslie of Plainfield, Vt.; sons Stephen of Bloomington, Minn., and John of Walnut Creek, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Elsa, Grant, Benjamin, Liam, Izac, Kaia, and Greta; and a brother F. Theodore Koehler of Dennis, Mass.

He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years and two sisters, Barbara Ellis and Janice Fitzer.

Carl requested that there be no service and in his own words, he is leaving no forwarding address. The children plan to scatter Carl's ashes in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California.

Carl and I worked together on a few Ortho Books in the 1950s and '60s while he was in the Insectory at UC Berkeley. I always admired him and enjoyed working with him. I just accidentally ran across his obit while looking-up old collegues who worked for Ortho Books. I'm sure Carl will be missed by all who knew him!

When Carl's daughter, Leslie, married my step-son Michael Raker, I learned the my father, Dr. Edward A. Knowlton attended at the birth of Carl in 1932 in Holyoke, MA. A nice connection! I've enjoyed getting to know Carl, a very fine man and father.
