SHELBURNE FALLS - Charles P. Buck, 81, of 21 Sears St., Shelburne Falls, formerly of Ashfield, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.
He was born in Worcester April 22, 1931, the son of Arthur Buck and Madge (Thompson). A Korean War veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954.
He was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts and received a master's degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
He was a high school chemistry and physics teacher for 31 years. Prior to retirement in 1991, he was the science department head at Hampshire Regional High School.
He also taught at Sanderson Academy in Ashfield, Mohawk Trail Regional High School and Williamsburg High School. He also maintained a second career as a real estate agent.
At Sanderson Academy, he coached the girls' varsity basketball team. At Hampshire Regional, he advised the chess club, physics club and the National Honor Society at Hampshire.
Charles was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed canoeing, camping, hiking, biking and the ocean. He was an enthusiastic and spontaneous dreamer, ready to go on any adventure. He travelled to all 50 states and numerous countries on four continents.
He was also a "trooper," having battled through many of life's hurdles with few complaints. He very much enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren competing in various athletic endeavors over the decades. He was an avid Boston sports fan.
He was a charter member and past president of the Ashfield Lions Club. He remained an active member for 47 years. He was also a volunteer emergency medical technician with the Ashfield Ambulance and a member of the Ashfield Planning Board.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Beyon (Falcone); a daughter, Deborah Denton and her husband, Paul, of San Carlos, Calif.; a daughter, Laura Blakesley and her husband, David, of Westhampton; a son, William Buck and his wife, Lisa, of Buckland; a son, Phil Buck and his wife, Elizabeth, of Rowe, Mass.; a sister Barbara Hogan of Westminster, Mass.; nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home in Shelburne Falls Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 11 a.m., with a reception immediately following at the Shelburne/Buckland Community Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Shelburne Senior Center, 7 Main St., Shelburne Falls, MA, 01370, or the Ashfield Lions Club. The family would like thank the Franklin Medical Center, Springfield Baystate, and the Shelburne Ambulance Service.
