Easthampton - Chester Robert Shattuck, age 73, of Gula Drive in Easthampton, died on Thursday, April 11, 2013, at the Mercy Medical Center in Springfield after a brief illness.
He was born in Holyoke, Dec. 22, 1939, and was the son of the late Chester E. Shattuck and Gertrude (Martin) Shattuck.
He was raised in Holyoke and educated through elementary school there before moving to Dover, Del., were he completed his high school education at Dover High School, graduating with the class of 1957. There he played football and baseball. Soon after graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served his country from 1957-1961. He then entered the United States Air Force Reserves in February 1977 through December 1998 and obtained the rank of master sergeant. He retired from Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee and was a veteran of the Persian Gulf War.
Chester was employed for 28 years as a splice service technician, starting his career with New England Telephone and ending with Verizon.
He was married on Oct. 12, 1963, in New York to Jean Marie Robinson. They were parishioners of the former Notre Dame Parish, now Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Easthampton.
Chester was past commander of Post #337 of the Chicopee American Legion. He was an avid sports fan and loved the Red Sox and New England Patriots; he also enjoyed the companionship of his cocker spaniels, Jingles and Harley. He also belonged, along with his wife Jean, to a number of billiard leagues and teams, and enjoyed his home and yard work.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jean Marie (Robinson) Shattuck; one daughter, Beverly J. (Shattuck) Farnham of Holyoke; three sons, Robert P. Shattuck and his wife, Linda, of Chicopee, Daniel M. Shattuck of Easthampton, and Sean C. Shattuck and his wife, Kristin, of Holyoke; a brother, Richard Shattuck of Holyoke; nine grandchildren, Matthew Farnham, Alyssa Farnham, Christopher Shattuck and his wife, Sara, Ashley Shattuck, Patrick Shattuck, Nicole Shattuck, Ashley Bourdeau, Stephanie Ryan, and Jacob Shattuck; and three great-grandchildren, Raylen, Sofia and Lucas.
He was predeceased by a brother, George William Shattuck.
Calling hours for Chester will be Wednesday, April 17, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Graham Funeral Home, 18 Adams St., Easthampton, which has been entrusted by the family to provide for Mr. Shattuck's care and services. A funeral liturgy of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, April 18, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Valley Parish, 33 Adams St., Easthampton.Burial with full military honors will be held at 1 p.m. in the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.
