LEEDS - Irene Jessie (Reid) Sicurello, 89, passed away peacefully on Nov. 21, 2012, at Linda Manor Extended Care Facility in Leeds. Family members were by her bedside throughout the last weeks of her life. Her family will remember and greatly miss her humor, laughter, and the twinkle in her eye.
The Guest Book is expired.
Irene was born Oct. 16, 1923, in Pittsfield, to the late Albert and Jessie (May) Reid.
She had one brother, Jack, who preceded her in death in 1996.
Irene told many delightful stories about her childhood in Pittsfield: playing basketball, ice skating, and even living through the Great depression.
Irene graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1941, and married Frank Sicurello on May 21, 1942. Irene, a proud Scotswoman, married into a wonderful Italian family who provided Irene, Frank, and their seven children, much joy over the years. Frank Sicurello died on June 16, 1989.
Irene also told many stories of being a young mother during World War II, and the fear she had for her husband who was stationed on the Battleship Iowa in the Philippines. Throughout her life, she was deeply moved by the suffering of all families impacted by war in any country.
Once her children were all in school, she began to work outside of the home as a bookkeeper, work she thoroughly enjoyed, until she retired at age 70.
Irene loved children, interior decorating, animals, music of all kinds, nature, taking long rides in the car, putting puzzles together and most importantly playing cards.
Irene leaves seven children, a son, Frank and his partner Jay of Milford, Maine; a daughter, Jessie and her partner Richard of Steuben, Maine; a daughter, Shirley and her partner Barbara of Florence; a son, Robert and his wife Betsy of Camp Verde, Ariz.; a son, Michael and his wife Lynn of Tucson, Ariz.; a son, Edward and his partner Jose of Tucson, Arizona; a daughter, Ann and her partner Mary of Burlington, Vt.; nine grandchildren, Joshua, Jesse, Sean Michael, Daniel, Benjamin, Robert, Brian, Kenneth and Sean Paul; and eight great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Samantha, Kenneth, Adam, Sean, Gavin, David and Molly.
Irene was a member of the Haydenville Congregational U.C.C. Church in Haydenville. She loved the church, and her family is forever grateful for that beloved community.
There will be no calling hours and burial will occur at the Arms Cemetery in Shelburne Falls. A celebration of Irene's life will be announced at a later date.
