DEERFIELD – James Diggins, of Deerfield, passed away at age 81 on July 11, 2018, in Northampton.

He was born on May 27, 1937 in Northampton, to Catherine (Griffin) Diggins of Castlegregory Ireland and James M Diggins of Killorglin Ireland. He lived the majority of his life in the Baystate section of Northampton. He graduated from Smith Vocational High School in 1955 and went on to work for DA Sullivan & Sons for 35 years as a carpenter and remained an active member in the Western Mass Carpenters union for over 60 years., He retired in 1992 as a clerk of the works.

Upon retiring, he spent winters in Florida and summers in New England. He enjoyed watching sporting events involving his grandchildren and listening to Irish music. He also enjoyed camping weekends with the scouts and the Rockwood Yankees and wood carving.

He was the definition of volunteerism. He was the scoutmaster of troop 109 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Northampton for over 30 years, long before his sons were involved in scouting. He spent endless hours helping others with carpentry projects and working at the Chesterfield scout camp. He instilled the spirit of volunteerism to his children.

James was predeceased by his wife Eileen and daughter Kelly. He leaves behind his son Michael and wife Charleen and their children Kayla, Shannon and Bridget. His daughter Laurie. His son Patrick and wife Patricia and their children Molly, Jack and Erin. His daughter Robin and husband Nate Pitchko and their sons Sean and Aidan. Along with extended family and great friends.

Calling hours will be Sunday July 15 th from 3-6 p.m. at Ahearn's Funeral home, 783 Bridge rd. Northampton Ma. With a liturgy of Christian burial Monday, July 16, at 10 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament church on Elm St. in Northampton.
