FLORENCE - Jeanette F. (O'Neil) Gross, 81, of 24 West Center St., Florence, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at the Center for Extended care at Amherst after a period of failing health.

Jeanette was born June 7, 1931, in Northampton, the daughter of the late Grace (Lucier) O'Neil.

She was a longtime city resident, was educated in local schools and graduated from Northampton High School. She attended the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, receiving her degree in nursing in 1953.

She married Albion "Beanie" Gross and they settled in Florence to begin raising their family.

Jeanette worked in the maternity ward at Cooley Dickinson Hospital for over 25 years, welcoming thousands of babies to new families, before retiring in 1987.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Annunciation Church in Florence. Jeanette enjoyed knitting, especially needlepoint.

She was predeceased by her husband, Albion "Beanie" Gross in 1981 and her brother John "Jack" O'Neil in 2004.

She leaves her children, Thomas Gross and his wife Lora of Sunderland, Michael Gross and his wife Sara of Northampton, James Gross and his wife Sharon of Florence, Alan Gross of Agawam and Sandra Gross of Greenfield; six grandchildren, Kyle, Kaylie, Kirk, Kristin, Mikey and Sean Gross; as well as many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to especially thank the nurses and direct care staff at the Center for Extended Care at Amherst for the compassion, care and the thoughtfulness they have shown Jeanette over the years.

Calling hours at the Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be Friday at 9 a.m. from the Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at the Annunciation Chapel of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Beacon Street, Florence, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Northampton.
