SOUTH HADLEY - John M. Foley, 82, passed away peacefully April 25, 2013, at his home in South Hadley.

He was a native of Holyoke where he was born in 1930.
He was a teacher and math department chairman at the Holyoke High School for over 30 years, where he taught advanced calculus. He also taught mathematics at Holyoke Community College, St. Hyacinth Seminary, Williston Academy and the Mount Holyoke College summer math program.
John was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1948 and received a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a master's degree in education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. John later received an master's in mathematics at Bowdoin College in Maine. He was also able to take advantage of a National Science Foundation grant for study at Oberlin College in Mathematics Education.
John is predeceased by his father, John Joseph Foley and his mother, Margaret Kennedy Foley.
He leaves his wife of 58 years, Elaine Vanasse; his brother, David Foley and his wife Annette and their three children, Maryanne, Daniel and Susan Foley; his brother Father Daniel Foley; six children, daughter Diane Foley, Ph.D and husband Dana Arnold, daughter Ann Foley, son John Foley and wife Behjat and their daughter Donya, son Stephen and wife Lyn, son David and partner Anthony Jones, daughter Joan and husband Sulaiman Hamarneh, MD.
John enjoyed traveling around the country to visit his children, crossword puzzles, the Boston Red Sox, walks at the Quabbin Reservoir and Pine Grove and listening to Irish music.
The Funeral for John will be Wednesday, May 1, at 8 a.m. from the Ryder Funeral Home, 33 Lamb St., South Hadley, followed by a funeral Mass at 9 a.m. in St. Theresa's Church, South Hadley. Committal services with military honors will follow at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Main Street, Agawam.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, April 30, from 4 to 8 p.m. Contributions, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Council on Aging, 45 Dayton St., South Hadley, MA 01075.
