Amherst - Liria (Zissi) Petrides, the longest serving member of the Young@Heart Chorus, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the Fisher Home in Amherst. She was 86.
She was born on March 1, 1926, in Manchester, N.H., and lived in Fitchburg for many years, where she worked as a secretary at Fitchburg High School before moving to Amherst.
Liria joined the Young@Heart Chorus in 1986 and at the time of her death had been in the group longer than any other member. She appeared in the 2007 documentary "Young@Heart."
She moved to Amherst in 1997 where she took part in varied community activities including the American Association of University Women Book Club and the Jones Library Reading Group.
She is survived by her three sons, Dennis, of Belchertown, and his wife, Linda, and their sons Matthew and Benjamin; Chris, of Northampton, and his wife, Sally Rubenstone, and their son Jack; and Michael of Leominster. She is also survived by her brother, Dr. Vangel Zissi of Winchester, and his wife, Barbara; and by many nieces and nephews.
Liria was predeceased by her parents, Dimitri and Anastasia (Adham) Zissi; her sister, Valentina Zissi; and her brother, George Zissi.
