EASTHAMPTON - Markell Torres, 18, son of Dawn and Pablo (Pete) Torres of Easthampton, died Thursday, July 11, 2013, in an automobile accident in Rhode Island, while vacationing with friends.

He was born Nov. 22, 1994, in Northampton.

Markell was an outgoing, social young man who loved to have fun and was close to his family. He lived with his parents, his sister Jacindalyn Torres and his brother Raul Torres. The three siblings were extremely close and participated in many school and social activities together.

Markell recently graduated from Easthampton High School in June and had attended the Lower Pioneer Valley Career and Technical Education Center in West Springfield, earning his state cosmetology license in May. He attended Easthampton schools, at times playing soccer, basketball and football.

He loved longboarding, could be seen often on the bike path with his brother and friends, and in the summers he spent time with them at local swimming holes.

In his junior year he, encouraged by his sister Jacindalyn, joined the cheerleading team. He encouraged other boys, including his brother Raul, to join the team and the team won the Western Mass championships for the two years he was on the team. He recently was awarded a scholarship to cheer on the All-Star East Celebrity Elite team in Tewksbury. He was so excited about his future with this team as they are favored to attend the world championships in April. This was Markell's dream, to make it to worlds!

Besides his parents and siblings living in Easthampton, he is survived by two brothers, Jiel and Jarel Torres of Brooklyn, N.Y.; grandparents Michele Subocz of Easthampton, James Garvey of Holyoke, and Ramona Rivera of Easthampton; great-grandparents Michael and Theresa Subocz of Greenfield; aunts and uncles Kurt and Jenna Garvey, Brad and Maura O'Niell-Garvey of Holyoke, and Beth and Michael Woofenden of Chestefield; and many other loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visiting hours will be Friday, July 19, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Mitchell Funeral Home, 15 Park St., Easthampton.

Donations can be sent to the Markell Torres Family Fund, account number 1982379142, Florence Saving Bank.
