HADLEY - Phyllis B. (Bean) Parsons, 82, of Mill Valley Road, passed away Jan. 28, 2013, at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.

Born Jan. 23, 1931, in Warner, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Harold and Doris (Phelps) Bean.

She graduated from the Simonds Free High School in Warner and the University of Massachusetts in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in home economics.

Phyllis began her teaching career at Ludlow Junior High and later worked for decades as a substitute teacher at Hopkins Academy in Hadley. Phyllis also ran the office at Parson's Farms for many years in addition to serving as secretary to the Hampshire County Farm Bureau and the New England Sheep and Wool Growers Association.

Phyllis had a long association with 4-H, beginning in her childhood and continuing through her work with the Hampshire County Extension Service. For her longtime, outstanding volunteer club leadership she was awarded the Bertha L. Ezold Award in 1986.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Hadley and the Warner Historical Society.

Phyllis valued education and learning, a belief she shared with her family and lived through her travel to many countries, hosting international visitors at her family's home and her eagerness to get to know new people.

Phyllis leaves her husband of 59 years, Kenneth; their sons, Matthew Parsons and his wife Brenda of Hadley (Christopher and Katelyn) and Thomas Parsons and his wife Corrina of Christianna, Pa., (Nolan and Quinn); their daughter Karen Parsons and her husband Simon Holdaway of Windsor, Conn., (Katherine and Hannah); her brother Bruce Bean and his wife Joanne of Magalloway, Maine; her sister Nancy Eastman and her husband John of Warner; sisters-in-law, Shirley Parsons of Hadley and Priscilla Finck and her husband Richard of Easthampton; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Hadley followed by a reception. Burial will be later. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ahearn Funeral Home in Northampton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church in Hadley or to the Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
