NORTHAMPTON – Phyllis Joan Shegan, 78, known to family and friends as "Nan", died Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at Linda Manor Extended Care Facility. She resided at McDonald House on Old South Street in Northampton.

She was born Oct. 23, 1934, in Clariton, Pa., where she was the daughter of the late Harry Jolliffe and Ethel Mae Sutton.

She graduated from McKeesport High School in 1953 and trained to be a nurse at the McKeesport Hospital School of Nursing. She practiced nursing for over 30 years, most of them spent as head nurse of the Emergency Room at McKeesport Hospital and then Somerset Hospital in Somerset, Pa.

For many years she lived in Rockwood, Pa. In 2003, she moved to Northampton to be near her beloved nieces Charlotte M. (Charie) Baugh and Rev. Dr. Constance M. (Connie) Baugh. Charie died later that year. Connie has been Nan's main support ever since and they have cherished one another.

After her years of nursing, marriage and life in Pennsylvania as part of a large family, Nan came to enjoy living in western Massachusetts. She loved the view from her apartment window, where she could watch the comings and goings of residents, dog walkers on the bike path, and at Christmas time, the beautifully lit tree in Pulaski Park. She also enjoyed McDonald House Christmas parties, Bingo nights (where she often won), dinners out with Connie, Carolyn and Peggy, and visits from her son David and his family.

Nan was predeceased by her husband Rudy Shegan, sister Mary Ellen Harvey, brother Robert Englert, brother Harry Jolliffe, and niece Charlotte Baugh.

She is survived by her sister Priscilla Schweitzer, her son David Tolitsky, daughter-in-law Melinda, and three grandchildren, Abby, Julia Rose, and Savannah, and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves dear friends Carolyn Benson, Peggy Anderson, Ellen DuPont, Cheryl Camp, Patti Boyer and special neighbors at McDonald House.

Visiting hours will be held Monday from 12 to 3 p.m. at Pease & Gay Funeral Service, 425 Prospect St., Northampton, with a service of remembrance at 2 p.m. Burial will follow immediately at Village Hill Cemetery in Williamsburg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Employees Fund at Linda Manor Extended Care Facility, 349 Haydenville Rd., Leeds, MA 01053.
