SANIBEL, Fla. - Stanley J. Murdza, "Stan the Vegetable Man", passed away Aug. 14, 2012, in Sanibel.

He was born Sept. 26, 1915, in Chicopee, Mass.

He was in the National Guard where he won a silver medal in boxing. He married his late wife Stasia Wiater and joined the Navy when the war broke out and served as a Pharmacist's Mate, First Class.

He worked for the VA in Leeds, Mass., and the Westover Air Force Base, Westfield, Mass., where he drove crash trucks. He owned and operated Stan's-Drive-In for 50 years.

He was married for 65 years to Stasia Wiater until her passing in 2007.

He leaves behind his daughter Darlene Waskiewicz of Sanibel Island, four grandchildren, Toni Underwood of Sanibel, Melissa Waskiewicz of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Stacey McCarty of Windsor, Conn., and Angela Waskiewicz of Sanibel, and seven great-grandchildren.

A private burial was held at the Holy Rosary Cemetery in Hadley, Mass., with military honors.

Drozdal Funeral Home of Northampton is in charge of the arrangements.
