Florence - Teresa J. Gartin, 59, of 28 Willow St., passed away Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2012, at the Baystate Medical Center, after suffering from a major stroke.
Born in King City, Mo., July 5, 1953, she was the daughter of Ray and Beatrice (Quintero) Gartin. She served in the U.S. Army from 1972-78. Teresa worked for the Northampton Housing Authority for over 20 years, starting as an administrative assistant and leaving as a painter, due to disability. Teresa always had soft spot for children and animals.
She opened her heart and home for several years to foster children and did the best that she could to make their difficult time a little easier. Though she did not have a lot, Teresa was a very caring and generous woman throughout her life and continued, even after death, as she gave the gift of life through tissue donation.
Teresa is survived by her daughter, Maggie Gartin, and grandson, Gaige Avery O'Brien, of Florence; Crystal Rosa, whom Teresa raised and loved as her own; Jalen Merced and Luis Jimenez, whom she loved as her own grandchildren; her brother, Richard Gartin and his wife, Kathy, of Kansas City, Mo.; sisters Kathy Cook and her husband, Carl, of Seattle, and Dorothy Jean Marshall of Tamarac, Fla.; her nieces and nephews Tyler, Brent, Hannah, Brian, David, Jason, Rick and Angie; her godchildren Christopher Humphrey and Jennifer Clark; and her best friends, Ceil Humphrey and Roy Cintron, who support her daughter in this time of great sorrow.
A memorial service for Teresa will be held at a later date at the Ahearn Funeral Home. Burial will be private.
