Teresa O'Shea Obituary

Teresa (Teri) Jean O'Shea (age 66) passed away peacefully on November 28, 2018 at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton MA. She was a kind and generous person with a wonderful sense of humor, a passion for social justice, and a fierce love of life.

Teri was born into a military family on February 4, 1952 and moved every two years during her childhood, living at naval bases in Rhode Island, Norway, Japan, Pennsylvania and a number of other locations. She earned her B.A. in Journalism from the University of California at Berkeley.

Inspired by youthful idealism at age 19, Teri joined the Peoples Temple led by Jim Jones. In the early years, Jones seemed to be dedicated to fighting racism and helping people who were marginalized, but Teri ended up being held captive in Jonestown in Guyana, and she was the last person to escape before the massacre in 1978. As a result of her experiences in Jonestown, she lived with severe post-traumatic stress disorder for the rest of her life.

In spite of her personal challenges, she dedicated her life to helping others and spent 30 years working as an advocate for people with disabilities. She learned sign language and became involved in the deaf community in Brooklyn, NY in the 1980's. When she moved to Springfield, MA in 1989, she joined the staff of Stavros Center for Independent Living, and wrote the grant that established their Peer Assistive Technology Project. She was a pioneer in helping people with disabilities gain access to the technological devices that could help them. She served on the Governor's Advisory Commission on Disability Policy and she was on the board of several other state-wide disability policy groups.

Following her time at Stavros, she managed the Adaptive Computer Lab at Holyoke Community College, and then moved on to work with The Resource Partnership and CareerPoint (now known as MassHire Holyoke), where she helped people with disabilities get jobs and access more services.

One constant in her life was her love of poetry. She started writing poetry at age 7 after calling the public library to find out where she could get a "poetic license." In 2011 she published a book of poems and pictures about her Jonestown experiences, Jonestown Lullaby, and she was active in the Florence Poets Society, participating in their readings and publishing poems in their Silkworm journals. She was also a gifted visual artist who loved to paint and do crafts.

Teri is survived by her daughter, Vita Thais O'Shea and a large circle of friends and colleagues who loved and admired her. Online or mailed donations can be made in her honor to Stavros Center for Independent Living, 210 Old Farm Road, Amherst, MA 01002. A memorial will be held for her in Northampton, MA on Sunday afternoon, February 3, 2019, the day before her birthday.

We met Terri in 1975 in San Diego. We lived next door to Terri and Jim Winklepleck on Beadnell Way. Terry was, I believe, 19 years, very pretty and a very nice person to talk to. We have several pictures of her and Jim in our photo album. Jim was working at Gemco. We did not meet them after we moved to UC Santa Cruz in the summer of 1976. We later read, of course, about Terri in the newspapers. We just learned that she passed away about a year ago and we are very sorry to hear about it.

We met Terri in San Diego in 1975. We lived in the same housing complex, next door, with Terri and Jim Winklepleck. I believe Terri was 19. Very pretty and a very nice person to talk to. We have in our photo album a few more pictures of Terri and Jim

Vita, I was talking about your mom today with my daughters and how wonderful and considerate she was. I just discovered that she passed on. When we drove together we would talk about you and my kids. She would always ask how are the girls? Our condolences. Teri will be missed...

Vita,
So sorry to see this news about your mom. She (and you) were very kind and compassionate to me in a delicate time in my life and I remember you both so fondly. You were lucky to have the chill mom and close relationship with her. You both had your own kitty language meowing to each other to communicate was so cute. I now do that with my own children so you both left an imprint in my life.
Bless and love forever
Drisana

Vita,

I didn't know your Mom as well as I would have liked (we live on the CT/MA border and I wasn't able to spend alot of time in Northampton) but what I did know of Terri was that she was a brave, compassionate, intelligent and sometimes troubled soul. She didn't complain, she was a good listener and she loved you. I marvel at all the things she bravely faced through out her life and did her best through it all, plus passing on the gift of poetry. She lived as many of us imagine our best selves. My heart goes out to you.

I am so sorry to hear of Teri's passing. Teri worked for me at Resource Partnership and I would always tell people that if they were working with Teri, they were in good hands. I always had 100% confidence in her. She was a staunch advocate, and totally committed to the people she was serving. Moreover, Teri became a dear friend of mine. I learned a lot from Teri about life, and I always enjoyed her sense of humor. She would always ask, Do you have time for one joke?! And it was always a good one! My heart goes out to her family and friends, especially her daughter whom she loved so dearly and spoke of frequently. Rest in peace, my friend.
