AMHERST - Catherine Marie Peterson, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 7 at Hadley at Elaine Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. Catherine was born Oct. 15, 1920, in Amherst, the daughter of Anne (Moran) and Oscar Peterson. She lived the majority of her life in Amherst.

Catherine graduated from Amherst High School in 1938 and the University of Vermont with a teaching degree in 1942. She did graduate work at Springfield College. Her teaching spanned over 41 years, most spent at Deerfield High School, (Frontier Regional High School) where Catherine primarily taught French among other subjects over her teaching career. She taught multiple generations of families in Deerfield and surrounding towns.

One of her greatest joys was coaching the school's Cheerleading Squad through a number of winning seasons. She also escorted several groups of students to Europe to broaden their horizons and give them the opportunity to practice French outside the classroom. The number of visitors, cards and letters she received throughout her illness is a tribute to the many that remembered and loved "Miss Pete".

Catherine was an active, lifelong member of Grace Episcopal Church in Amherst. One of her proudest accomplishments was the St. Nicholas Christmas Bazaar which she enjoyed and helped organize for many years.

Catherine leaves several family members who lovingly helped care for her during her illness, Eleanor Evans, Sheliah Moran, Tucker Moran, Anne Moran, Donald and Cynthia Moran, Frank and Charlene Moran, dear friend Lucy Melnick, and many more first and second cousins whom she loved and kept track of. She was predeceased by her cousin Richard Moran.

The family wishes to especially thank the capable and compassionate personnel of the Leeds Unit and Sol Amor Hospice.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 10th at 10 am at Grace Episcopal Church on the Common in Amherst, with burial in Wildwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Catherine's honor to one of the following: Sol Amor Hospice, 15 Mid State Dr., Suite 215, Auburn, MA 01501, the , Western MA Chapter, 264 Cottage Street, Springfield, MA 01104 or the Frontier Regional High School Alumnae Fund, c/o Frontier Regional High School.
