EASTHAMPTON - Rita M. (Halford) Morrissey, 92, of Plaza Avenue, passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at her home.
She was born in Easthampton, June 6, 1920, the daughter of the late William J. and Anna (Murphy) Halford Sr. She was educated at the former Immaculate Conception School in Easthampton, a graduate of the former St. Michael's High School and the former Northampton Commercial College, both in Northampton, and later she had attended the Holyoke Community College.
Rita was employed as an executive secretary at the former Springfield Armory for 25 years, retiring in 1966. She also had been employed as a personal secretary for both Miss Dorothy Sears Ainsworth and Professor Henry Russell Hitchcock at Smith College for many years.
She was a lifelong communicant of the former Immaculate Conception Church, now Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Easthampton.
Rita was a member of the former Daughters of Isabella, the Easthampton Women's Club, and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Rita's beloved husband, Edward J. Morrissey, passed away in 1996, and her caring brother, William J. Halford Jr., passed in 1988. Rita is survived by her loving sister-in-law, Mary E. Halford; her adored nephew, William J. Halford III and his wife, Laurie; and her cherished grandnieces and grandnephew, Brittany of Brookline, Corrin, and Alex Halford of Easthampton.
A calling hour will be held Wednesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 17 Clark St., Easthampton, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Valley Church, 33 Adams St. Burial will be in St. Brigid's Cemetery.
