He was born Sept. 7, 1948, in Springfield the son of the late Raymond H. Sr., and Roberta Urban Cushing Cowell.
He grew up in Cummington attending schools and graduating from Wahconah Regional High School in Dalton, class of 1965. He graduated from Western New England College in 1970 receiving a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam conflict serving in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Harold Holt.
Raymond was employed by Mass Mutual Insurance Company as a systems specialist retiring in 2011.
He is survived by his wife Donna Drew Cushing; two brothers, Thomas Cowell of Bellingham and Lorin Cowell of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters, Judith Meredith of Dorchester and Lynn Cowell of Leeds; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and John Cowell.
Friends may call Monday, May 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Mitchell Funeral Home, 15 Park St., Easthampton.
There will be a private funeral service Tuesday, May 21, at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Easthampton Community Center's Food Pantry or to the Easthampton EMTs.
