SOUTH HADLEY - Laura Gene (Ryder) Ryan, 87, of South Hadley, passed away Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at the Loomis Nursing Center in Holyoke,. Laura was born on June 9, 1926, in Holyoke,. She was the daughter of the late Myron W. and Reta M. Ryder. Laura was a graduate of Chicopee High School and received her nursing home administrator license from Babson College. She worked as the administrator for her family owned businesses, the Green Meadow Nursing Home in Ashfield and the Ryder Nursing Home in Florence, until 1975. She then worked as the administrator, for many years, at the Poet Seat Nursing Home in Greenfield.
Laura began working as a senior aide for WestMass Eldercare in 1987 at the South Hadley public library and then went on to be an Ombudsmen in 1991. She received numerous awards for her outstanding service as an advocate for patients and their families as an Ombudsmen.
At the time of her passing, Laura was a member of the South Hadley Congregational Church, South Hadley Women's Club and the South Hadley TRIAD. She was predeceased by her husbands, Karl Schneider and James Ryan, her daughter, Wallis Elizabeth Granger, and her two brothers, Myron W. Ryder and her twin Louise Ryder. Laura leaves her daughter, Christy Ann Geffin of Holyoke, her grandchildren, Mathew Karl Geffin and his wife Tamara of Westfield, her granddaughter, Sarah Gene Geffin of Southampton and her grandson, Nathaniel Page of Plainfield. She also leaves three great-grandsons, Carlos Salbat Jr., Brady James and Drew Ryder Geffin, her cousin Judith Snyder of Somers, CT., as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Laura was a loving, caring woman, who touched the lives of many; for that we are truly grateful.
She will be deeply missed by her "best girl" Christy Ann. Ryder Funeral Home is in charge of all funeral arrangements. Visiting hours are on Wednesday, Jan. 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. Her funeral will be held at the South Hadley Methodist Church in South Hadley Falls, on Thursday, Jan. 30, at 10:30 a.m. with her burial to follow in the Fairview Cemetery in Chicopee.
