NORTHAMPTON - Joan Mikkelsen Etzel passed away on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.
The Guest Book is expired.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on July 31, 1934, she was the daughter of the late George and Anne Mikkelsen. Joan is survived by her children Michael Etzel, Kate Etzel and her spouse Laura Etzel, and Jay Etzel; her grandchildren Sarah and Maddie Etzel; her sister Susan Mikkelsen Solano; her niece Amanda Petrozzini; her nephew Andrew Curtis; and her great-niece Isabelle Petrozzini.
Joan graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from Connecticut College in 1956. She received a double master's degree from Fairfield University in the 1970s.
During her life she had a number of careers including guidance counselor, writer, and teacher. However, her most beloved job was being a mother to her children whom she adored. She was an adventurous spirit with passions for nature, art and athletics. She excelled in sports such as tennis, horseback riding, swimming and paddle tennis. She possessed a contagious laugh and a dry wit.
The early years of her life were spent in the Pound Ridge/ New Canaan area where she and her husband raised their three children. In 2006 Joan moved to western Massachusetts to be near her daughter Kate and her family. She lived at the Arbors in Amherst and finally Linda Manor in Leeds. From there she was able to spend time with her grandkids. The family wishes to extend a very special thanks to the staff at Linda Manor for the continued support they have shown throughout Joan's time there to both her and her family.
Joan taught us all that while a person's body may be frail and succumb to disease and illness, their spirit can remain strong and shine through.
Calling hours will be on Saturday, Feb. 15, at Ahearn Funeral Home from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., with the funeral at 3:30 and reception to follow. Graveside burial will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the Holy Rhodes Cemetery in Garden City, Long Island.
