NORTHAMPTON - Ralph G. Cayo, Sr., of Northampton, passed away Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at home.
The Guest Book is expired.
He was born Sept. 16, 1928, in Easthampton, the son of Ralph W. and Hazel (Burnash) Cayo. He attended Easthampton schools and later entered the U.S. Army and was proud to serve in the artillery in Germany.
Ralph started out a farmer then a painter like his dad. He also worked for the former National Felt Company in Easthampton, retiring in 1994, after more than 40 years.
Ralph, with his wife Helen I. Barcomb Cayo, who passed away in 2012 after fighting cancer for nine years, made Northampton their home. Ralph enjoyed working outdoors when his health was good. He loved bird watching, fishing, the Red Sox, reading history, music of which he recorded records in his younger days, and was a super gardener. Mr. Cayo was a member of the Florence Annunciation church.
Ralph is survived by his son Ralph G. Cayo, Jr., and his wife Pauline Cayo; five grandchildren, Sherri, Dawn, Scott, Jesse and Josh; six great-grandchildren, Yasmeen, Morgan, Makaila, Hayleigh, Zoe and Lillian; two brothers, William and Robert Cayo; and one sister, Linda Cayo Palin. Ralph also leaves three special people, Alan and Carol Barcomb and Gary Barcomb, who helped him to pass a day.
Ralph was predeceased by four brothers, Herbert, George, Donald and Denny and one sister, Patty Cayo Dion.
Ralph also leaves many brothers-in-law Dennis, Arnold, Donald, Gary, Alan, Ronald and William, and many sisters-in-law Lynn, Betty, Carol, Janet, Elaine, Shirley and Laurice. Ralph will be missed so very much by his son Ralph, Jr., together they bonded more than most dads and sons. Ralph, Jr., could tell his dad anything and never feel judged. There is a black hole that is not fully there yet but will be soon. We will all miss Ralph's calm, friendly smile, his humble way of talking, and his honest yankee mentality. God Bless you dad, Sonny, Ralph, grandpa, great-grandpa, uncle, and friend. Give mom a hug for me.
Mr. Cayo's services will be held in the Spring at Brookside Cemetery. Mitchell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. www.mitchellcofuneralhome.com.
