WHATELY – Joseph Rup, 98, of 45 Christian Lane, Whately, passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at Calvin Coolidge Rehabilitation Center in Northampton.

He was born Feb. 28, 1916, in Hadley, the son of Andrew and Catherine (Pekala) Rup. Joseph attended Hadley schools as a teenager and worked at Globe Market in Amherst.

He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. in 1933. Joseph married Mary Gromaski of Whately, May 17, 1937, and they made their home in Whately. They recently celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary.

He worked at the Northampton State Hospital in the early 30's, later joining his father in farming in 1936. After his father's death, he took over management of the farm. He was in charge of warehousing for Cohn Brothers Fisher Company, Culbro Tobacco Company, where he was the manager of shade tobacco for 20 years and a superintendent for Consolidated Gulf and Western for seven years. In the 1950's, he was a tobacco inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. During World War II, Joseph worked as an inspector for the Springfield Ordinance War Department from 1944 to 1945. He was also an adjuster for the Connecticut Valley Hail Insurance Company, with Howard Waite.

He helped build the first Fire Department in Whately, with Gene Graves, served on the Whately Finance Board for 25 years from 1961 to 1986, he was on the Whately Bicentennial Committee in 1970, and served on the Whately Building Code Board of Appeals from 1974 to 2005, the Whately Weights and Measurements Committee and worked for George Gramacki Insurance & Real Estate Company of South Deerfield.

Besides his wife Mary Rup of Whately, he leaves his son Ronald and his wife Mary Jane of Essex Junction, Vt.; three sisters, Edna Bartos of South Deerfield, Wanda Helstowski of Whately, and Ramona Nieskoski of Ludlow; three grandchildren, Ronald Rup, Jr., Robin Veneztia and Sean Rup; four great-grandchildren, Travis Rup, Anastasia Rup, Bridget Veneztia and Skylar Rup; and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by four brothers, Roman, Andrew, Jr., John and Eugene Rup, three sisters, Anna Richmond, Antoinette Adamski and Jenny Yagodzinski, and his grandson Todd Rup.

Funeral services will be Thursday, March 6, at 9:15 a.m. from the Wrisley Funeral Home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church with Fr. Philippe Roux officiating. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m.
