FLORENCE - Linda Estelle (Bak) deVarennes, 64, of Florence, passed away quietly Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

Born July 26, 1949, in Holyoke, to Joseph S. and Barbara (Monks) Bak, she was raised in Hawaii, Long Island, N.Y., and Chicopee.

She was a member of the Chicopee Comprehensive High School class of 1967, earned an AA degree from Holyoke Community College in 1969, and a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, with an MT (ASCP) certification from the Holyoke Hospital School of Medical Technology in 1971.

She worked in the laboratory and blood bank at Holyoke Hospital for 38 years until her retirement. There she met her beloved husband Edouard A. deVarennes, II, and they were married May 26, 1972.

Many fine examples of her embroidery, stained glass, knit sweaters, felted hats, and hooked rugs adorned her home. She cultivated orchids and African violets in her sunny living room, and maintained a large collection of iris' in her perennial garden. She loved her dog and cat, kept a watchful eye on the weather report, and usually guessed whodunnit long before finishing the final chapter.

Linda will be dearly missed by her husband Ed; her son Ted and his wife Ryan and grandson Teddy of West Springfield; her sister Barbara St. Peter of Chicopee; her sister Joyce Bak and her wife Jeri Meuse of Chicopee; her brother Dennis Bak and his wife Julie of Acton; 11 nephews; a niece; and two great-nephews.

Visiting hours will be held Saturday, March 8, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Ahearn Funeral Home on Bridge Road in Northampton, and will be followed by a funeral service.

Donations in her memory may be made to the D'Amour Cancer Center: https://foundation.baystatehealth.org/NetCommunity/SSLPage.aspx?pid=514

Linda's family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the doctors and nursing staff at Baystate Medical Center for the care and compassion they showed her.
