WESTHAMPTON - Ernest Sicard, 95, of 36 Kings Highway, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014, at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.

He was born Feb. 23, 1919, in Turners Falls, the son of the late Charles and Evelyn (Grimard) Sicard. He was raised and educated in Turners Falls, and graduated from Turners Falls High School.

Ernest was a sergeant with the 91st Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron in the U.S. Army. He saw action in Naples during the invasion of Italy, as well as Rome. While stationed in Italy, Ernest witnessed the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 1944. He also served in the North African Theatre of Operations. He received the European Theatre of Operations medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the American Theatre Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged and returned home in 1945.

Ernest was married Feb. 23, 1946, to Eleanor "Dolly" Mandeville. They celebrated 66 years of marriage before Eleanor's passing in 2011.

Ernest worked for over 40 years at Pro Brush in Florence, where he was a Millwright until his retirement in 1981. He was an avid gardener, and a bird and nature photographer.

He was predeceased by his wife Eleanor "Dolly" Sicard and their son Gene Sicard. He was also predeceased by his three sisters, Anita Niquiette, Pauline Allen, and Ernestine Bombard.

He leaves his son Alan Sicard of Waldoboro, Maine, and his daughter Susan Sicard of Westhampton. He also leaves seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 21 nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Annunciation Chapel of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Florence. Calling hours will precede the funeral at the Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Spring Grove Cemetery in Florence.
