EASTHAMPTON – John Francis Wright, 88, a lifelong resident of Easthampton, died Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, after a period of failing health.

He was born Jan. 3, 1926, in Easthampton, and was the son of the late Mary Ann Wright. He was educated in Easthampton public schools and was a member of the graduating class of 1943 at Easthampton High School. He was an outstanding athlete and was the Eagles team captain of both the soccer and basketball teams.
John enlisted with the United States Army Air Corp in December of 1943, and was a proud World War II veteran serving through May of 1946. Upon his return, he then continued his education at Eastern Kentucky University studying business administration, then furthering his education at Western New England College and New York University in Albany.
He was married Feb. 26, 1948, in Springfield, to the former Mildred Verna (Fierer) Wright and they celebrated 56 years of marriage together before her death March 25, 2004.
John worked for 12 years as a sales representative for the former United Elastic Company in Easthampton. In 1968, John went to work for the Veterans Administration Medical Center and was the director of laundry services in Northampton, Brockton, and Bedford, then San Antonio, Texas, Togas, Maine, and Albany, N.Y., locations before retiring in 1988, with 20 years of service.
He was a communicant of the former Immaculate Conception Parish, now Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Easthampton, a member of the American Legion Dalton/LaVallee Post 224, Disabled Veteran's Association, and Knights of Columbus Council #1116 of Easthampton. He also loved traveling and was an avid sports fan of all types.
John is survived by two sons, Lohn F. Wright and his wife Lucia (Kaczynski) Wright and Kimberly J. Wright and his wife Gail (Radgowski) all of Easthampton; three granddaughters, Tamara Geffin and her husband Mathew of Westfield, Nicole Griffin and her husband James of Chicopee, and Elissa Wright of Easthampton; two great-grandsons, Brady and Drew Geffin; one brother Walter Roukey of Eldridge, Iowa; two sisters, Sondra Snape of Huntington, and Thelma Boulanger of Easthampton; and a cousin Shirley Zerdecki of Easthampton.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Connie Roy, Roma Roukey and Shirley Varady.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 22, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Valley Parish, 33 Adams St., Easthampton. Burial with military honors will be private at Saint Stanislaus Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Monday, April 21, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Graham Funeral Home, 18 Adams St., Easthampton, whom has been entrusted with providing for John's care and services.
Memorials are requested to Our Lady of the Valley Parish in his memory.
