SOUTH DEERFIELD - Edith A. (Szymanski) Kocot died peacefully Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at home surrounded by family in South Deerfield, at 98 years young.

Edith is preceded in death by her husband Henry Kocot.

Edith is survived by her children Edith Ostrowski, Henry Kocot and Comrade Karla Clarke, Henrietta Kocot and Comrade Don Quimette, Jr., all of South Deerfield. Edith is preceded in death by her son Anthony Kocot and survived by Anthony's wife Patricia Kocot of Conway. Edith is prededed by her son-in-law Anthony Ostrowski, husband to the current Edith Ostrowski. Edith is also survived by her sister/best friend Nellie Omasta. Edith is preceded by her brothers Henry Symanski and John Szymanski along with sisters Laura Jakimko and Helen Kieras. Edith was blessed with several grandchildren Jeffery Kocot and wife Shellie, Joseph Kocot and wife Joanne, Terri Ann Kocot, Jennifer Mikaelian and husband Matthew, John Kocot and wife Danielle, Stanley Ostrowski and Comrade Valerie Oldford. Edith had the pleasure of her great-grandchildren Hailey and Jasmyne Ostrowski, Clayton, Carson, Kaylin and Kenadie Kocot and many nieces and nephews.

Edith was born Aug. 24,1915, in Whately, to Stanislawa and Antonia Szymanski. She attended Deerfield High School along with hairdressing school in Greenfield.

She married Henry Kocot of Northampton, they had four children and raised tobacco and cucumbers along with the dairy farm. Edith worked as a hairdresser and also worked at Pro Brush in Florence, retiring in 1980.

Edith then enjoyed traveling, her vegetable and flower gardens and all of nature. Edith enjoyed watching the University of Connecticut girls basketball team and of course her favorite, the Red Sox. Edith was famous for her fudge and was generous by sharing it with all. Edith was a dedicated member of the Holy Family Church.

The family would like to thank her caregivers Denise Gibson, Carol Baranoski, and Justine Kazanecka; the staff at Baystate Franklin Medical Center, Elaine of Hadley Rehab. Center, VNA Hospice, Dr. Pat Iverson and staff, Dr. James Arcoleo and staff and Deacon Theodore Tudryn for all their care and dedication.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 9, at 9:15 a.m. from the Wrisley Funeral Home, Sugarloaf Street, South Deerfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church in South Deerfield. Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m.
